Turtles (aquatic) and tortoises (land) are characterised by a

particular development of the spinal and dermal bones,

which led to the formation of the carapace having a protective function.

Due to their exceptional skeletal development, turtles and tortoises require

significant amounts of calcium in the diet, which must be properly balanced

with Phosphorus in a 4-6:1 ratio for correct intestinal absorption.

This is especially essential for young growing turtles and for females producing eggs.

The bioavailability of calcium in feed is a very important parameter,

as not all forms of calcium are suitable for turtles and tortoises.

Since calcium is absorbed from the intestine only in the presence of adequate

vitamin D3 levels, it is important to offer animals sufficient exposure to UVA and UVB rays,

so that they can synthesize the vitamin in their epidermis.
