CALCIUM IN THE DIET OF THE CHELONS

Turtles (aquatic) and tortoises (terrestrial) are characterized by a particular development of the spinal and dermal bones, which led to the formation of the carapace having a protective function. Due to their exceptional skeletal development, turtles and tortoises require significant amounts of calcium in their diet, which must be adequately balanced with phosphorus in a 4-6: 1 ratio for proper intestinal absorption. This is especially imperative for growing young baby turtles and egg-producing females.

The bioavailability of Calcium in feed is a very important parameter, since not all forms of Calcium are suitable for turtles and tortoises. Since calcium is only absorbed from the intestine in the presence of adequate levels of vitamin D3, it is important to offer animals sufficient exposure to UVA and UVB rays, so that they can synthesize the vitamin in their epidermis.
