This beautiful parakeet comes from Australia, measures an average of 30/35cm, and is excellent for those who want to start breeding a larger species of parrot than Lovebirds or Parakeets, as it adapts very well to both cage and aviary life.
A correct diet is based on a good mixture of seeds for parakeets with a little sunflower (preferably to include it in the diet only before winter), integrated with fresh fruit and vegetables, GRIT which helps digestion and integrates calcium, followed by the very classic bone of cuttlefish, egg food suitable for parrots during the reproductive period.
It reproduces very easily in captivity, in nature it nests in the hollows of trees, the ideal nest for the rosella is 40-50 cm high, with a square section of 25 cm, with a hole of at least 8cm which they will open if necessary. In the nest it is advisable to insert a ladder or a piece of net to facilitate entry and exit from the nest without having to step on the chicks or the eggs.
The female, after being courted by the male with a beautiful ritual (fanning of the tail, calls of love, etc…) lays from four to nine eggs which the female will begin to lay from the exit of the third egg. The chicks leave the nest after 3-4 weeks of life.
The cost of a pair of Rosellas is around 150E, and I must say that their colors are fantastic. It is a pity that with the hand rearing of these parrots, it is not possible to obtain the results of an inseparable, or rather I have heard breeders who raised chicks and after a few months they returned wary and did not let them touch them, but it is still worth having a pair by Roselle, the singing is flute, the colors are bright and in a beautiful large aviary they are really appreciated!!!
This species is included in CITES therefore whoever buys them must always be in order with the documents and report any births.
