RED TAIL ASH

Gray parrots are African with an ash-colored plumage and a typical red or brown square tail depending on the species that characterizes the genus to which they belong (Psittacus).

There are two species of gray parrot, the Congo (Psittacus erithacus) and the Timneh (Psittacus timneh) previously considered two subspecies.

Gray parrots: talkative fliers

In the wild, they occur in western and central Africa, from the Ivory Coast to western Kenya, Angola and southern Zaire. They are very noisy birds and live in flocks. They are good fliers over short distances. Grays are considered the best talking parrots; their only "rivals" in this particular competition are the Amazons. They can learn about 200 words. The gray Prudle managed to enter the Guinness Book of Records thanks to his extraordinary ability to reproduce more than 1000 words.

Grays have a featherless facial portion. There is a relationship between a very energetic and antioxidant-rich diet and some birds with bald patches on the head that live in the wild in environments with strong solar radiation. This also occurs in other parrots such as macaws and the palm cockatoo.

In nature, the fruits of the oil palm plant (Elaeis guineensis) represent the main element in the feeding of the African Grays: they consume only the pulp. From a nutritional point of view, palm nut is characterized by a high content of fat (especially saturated), beta-carotene and calcium.

The most frequent clinical cases of Grays held in captivity with nutritional problems are associated with hypovitaminosis A and hypocalcemia. According to some authors, hypocalcaemia would be linked to an inability to move the calcium deposits from the bones in the event of a deficient diet and therefore the calcium demands of the Grays would not be greater than those of other birds.

The primary choice of calcium-rich palm nut in grays in the wild could instead be the basis of the hypothesis according to which grays have greater calcium requirements. In both situations, there is no doubt that inadequate levels of vitamin D3 and the absence of adequate solar radiation in aviaries can lead to hypocalcaemia.
