Captive breeding is possible in a terrarium, ie a suitable container of suitable size (200–300 cm long, 150 cm wide, 180–200 cm high) which has characteristics similar to their natural environment. To do this it is necessary to keep in mind what type of animal is raised to regulate the appropriate temperature and humidity characteristics. What is very important is that the environment has different temperature zones to allow the animal to regulate its body temperature: a temperature range around 20-22 ° C for the night and around 35-40 ° C during the day with humidity around 70-80%. Given that the adult male can reach 1.5-1.8 m and the female is much smaller, the size of the reptile must adapt to the growth of the animal. The container must have two horizontal openings on both sides, one at the top and one at the bottom, to allow the exchange of air, incandescent lighting and a lamp for the growth of the iguana, pieces of trees inside that have the double aim to beautify the environment and allow the iguanas to move around the terrarium to regulate body temperature. It is very important that the heating comes from above because reptiles in the lower body are not as protected as in the upper body, which could lead to serious burns. Resistance lamps must be protected from direct contact with the reptile. The protective glasses must not filter the fundamental rays for the reptile.
