DOMESTIC FERRET PUPPY 3-6 MONTHS

Domestic ferret, scientific name: Mustela putorius furo. What does it mean? “Stinking thief”. Thief, because it hides the food, smelly because, if not sterilized, as we will see later, it really gives off a bad smell. Yet the domestic ferret is a very coveted animal, used for centuries to be with us humans, so much so that it hardly survives in nature.

Abandoning a pet ferret almost certainly means condemning him to certain death. He often gets into trouble, even at home you have to keep an eye on him like an eternal 2-year-old, but, by the way, he gets along well with children. Just make them understand, to both of them, how not to get bitten.

The domestic ferret is not a rodent it is carnivorous and belongs to the category of mustelids such as the otter, the weasel, the skunk, the mink, the marten, the badger, the sable and the ermine.

The size of the domestic ferret varies a lot, the largest are those bred for the company: they reach 60 cm, including the tail. The less domesticated colleagues, bred for hunting, are smaller, only 40 cm, and thick they are sold as domestic dwarf ferrets. As for the weight, the females range from 700 grams to 1.3 kg, the males from 1 to 2.3 kg. The appearance of the domestic ferret is elongated, its physique is slender, made especially for slipping into burrows, and also in all the gates that we accidentally leave open in the house: maximum risk of escape! Attention! The snout of the domestic ferret is also pointed and sprout rounded ears covered with hair and two lively and round eyes: black or dark brown, red only in albinos.Always round, the nose can be of various colors, from pink to black, it depends by the color of the coat of the domestic ferret which is formed by longer and darker hairs and a lighter and thinner undercoat. The tail is long and bushy, the legs are short and each has five toes. Being a carnivore, the domestic ferret has very developed and sharp teeth, especially the canines. There are 34 in total.

The domestic ferret is a balanced, and wild, middle ground between dog and cat. Of the first, there is the friendly and playful side: the domestic ferret is extremely sociable and becomes very attached to humans and to the whole family it joins. Left alone in the house for a long time it suffers, visibly, and just like a dog, if a little trained, it recognizes its name and runs as soon as we call it. And the feline part of the domestic ferret? Here it is: this animal dirties in the sand, plays with balls and similar trinkets, sleeps in baskets with warm clothes. Luckily, the cat hasn't got into the habit of sharpening its nails on carpets and furniture.

A little feline, like a big cat, is also the propensity of the domestic ferret to sleep many hours a day and, if the cat is at risk of scratching, with the children, the domestic ferret is of bites. Nothing serious, but it is still not pleasant, better not to let them play without supervision, at least not immediately, not before they have taken each other's measures. Otherwise, better fold a nice, soft and toothless stuffed animal. Even at almost natural size: 32 cm. In addition to a great effort to check where it needs and try to educate it, the domestic ferret must also be monitored a lot because it tends to dig and does not make problems, he, to combine disasters. In flower boxes, in gardens, but also at home: he is unaware of the dangers that threaten each other and combines them like a child who has learned to crawl and wanders curiously around the rooms. It should be kept on a leash! Uncontainable and unconscious, the domestic ferret cannot independently take care of its own safety, it is bold and it is we who must provide to equip the house to prevent escapes. Not only that: also pay attention to household appliances (washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, in which you can easily sneak), to doors and doors, to foreign bodies around that could be ingested by our domestic ferret. Ditto for toxic substances and that he also stays away from windows or balconies: he is bold, but the force of gravity does not forgive.

All this does not mean that the domestic ferret is not a cage animal. A few hours, okay, if we go out or at night, but in general it would be better to always have an enclosure or a room dedicated to him. If it is a case of a cage, it must be spacious, in height rather than in width, and well furnished. So, in addition to the essential litter box, it is necessary to make the domestic ferret feel at ease, to set up kennels, bowls for food and water and any pastimes such as the pipes they like to slip into. In general a cage can cost from 100 to 200 euros, without penthouses but very welcoming. There are also those with a lot of fence, a good compromise for those who do not want to keep it too free, loose cannon, at home. ..

As mentioned at the beginning, the domestic ferret, thief yes, for food - has nothing to do with the magpie! - but it's mostly smelly. This characteristic is linked to para-anal glands that secrete a substance with a pungent and unpleasant odor when the animal is strongly frightened or excited, perhaps from playing or cuddling.
