MEXICAN HAEMORHOUS CANARY

It measures about 12–15 cm in length, for a weight of 15.7–22.5 g

The wingspan is 20–25 cm. Appearance These are small birds with a robust and slender appearance,

equipped with a large head, a robust beak with a very slightly crossed tip and long, square tail and wings.

The plumage shows a very evident sexual dimorphism: the females, in fact,

They have a sober and camouflaged colouring, brown-hazel on the head and back,

with a tendency to darken on the tail and wings (the latter with feathers edged with grey-brown) while the throat,

The chest, sides and belly are greyish-brown in colour with darker speckles on the tips of individual feathers.

Adult males, however, have a red cephalothoracic portion that can extend

from the face alone to the entire head, possibly including the throat, chest, rump and belly

the extent and intensity of the red coloration are due both to the subspecies to which the animal belongs,

that in the reproductive phase (males in estrus have more intense coloration)

and the amount of carotenoids it takes in with its diet (for example,

introduced Hawaiian populations almost completely lack red).

In both sexes the beak is greyish in colour,

The legs are light flesh-colored and the eyes are reddish-brown.

In recent years several color mutations have been established on this finch,

among which are pheomelanic (also called ruby), peat, dilute, opal and the most recent dilute topaz,

all with autosomal recessive transmission.
