VENEZUELA CARDINALE Spinus cucullatus

The scientific name of the species, cucullatus, derives from the Latin and means "hooded",

in reference to the black head of the males; the common name is also a reference to the livery of the males,

as well as the distribution area of the species. These are small but robust looking birds,

equipped with a rounded head, a conical and pointed beak, pointed wings and a tail with a slightly forked tip.

The plumage of the males is unmistakable: the head (face, forehead, crown, cheeks, throat) is black,

just as the tail and wings are black (the latter with large red speckles on the coverts and flight feathers),

while the rest of the plumage (nape, neck, chest, belly, undertail, back and rump)

It is uniformly bright red in colour, darker and with blackish shades on the rump and shoulder blades and greyish flanks,

while in the cloaca area and on the undertail there are isolated white feathers. Sexual dimorphism is very evident,

as the female completely lacks the black on the head (while the black on the wings and tail remains,

with the former also featuring whitish-tipped oars) and almost entirely of red lipochrome,

present only in the elective areas (sides of the chest, rump, wing mirrors), while the rest of the livery is grey,

lighter on the face and ventral area and darker dorsally. In both sexes the beak and legs are blackish,

while the eyes are dark brown in color.
